Ebb and Flow First Nation celebrated the grand opening of its new Kindergarten to Grade 6 school Thursday.

The new school was designed with input from the community and is shaped like an eagle in flight, representing one of the seven sacred teachings in Indigenous cultures, a news release said. Construction began in spring 2022.

The old Kindergarten to Grade 12 school, built in 1983, is being renovated and expanded for Grade 7 to 12 students. Indigenous Services Canada is spending $56.5 million on the renovations, including building 22 new accommodations for teachers.

The 7-12 school is expected to be completed in March.

Ebb and Flow is about 260 kilometres north of Winnipeg. About 2,000 people live in the community.
