Red River College Polytechnic is rolling out a revamped advanced diploma in sign language to graduate more people who can provide interpretive services to the deaf in schools and other settings.

Advanced Education Minister Renée Cable said in a news release Friday that the province has committed $225,000 in one-time launch costs and $190,000 in annual funding for the program.

Students will study deaf history and culture and receive interpreting practice in both classroom and real-world settings during the three-year, full-time program, Cable said.

RRC Polytech is also offering three new American Sign Language courses through its continuing education department. The first intake, which has room for 20 students, is scheduled to begin this fall.
