Parks Canada will not allow motorized watercraft on Clear Lake this year in a bid to help prevent the spread of zebra mussels, despite previously saying such vessels would be permitted.

The federal government said in January that people would be able to use watercraft, including motorized vessels, as long as they were only used in Clear Lake.

Parks Canada said in a news release Friday that users of non-motorized watercraft, including kayaks and canoes, can choose between an annual permit to use only at Clear Lake or a permit to use at various other bodies of water in Riding Mountain National Park.

Non-motorized watercraft, fishing equipment, wetsuits and inflatables must complete a Parks Canada aquatic invasive species inspection.

“In the coming year, Parks Canada will initiate a comprehensive research approach to determine how motorized watercraft affect ecological, socioeconomic and cultural components of Clear Lake,” the release said.
