A Winnipeg man was killed when a vehicle lost control on Highway 59, went over a median and hit a light standard Saturday.

RCMP were sent to the crash site at Birds Hill Road in the Rural Municipality of East St. Paul at about 5 p.m.

Police said in a news release Monday that the vehicle was being driven erratically while southbound on the highway when the driver lost control at the turn at that intersection.

Both occupants were extracted from the vehicle, RCMP said.

The passenger, a 39-year-old Winnipeg man, died at the scene, police said. The driver, a 31-year-old Winnipeg man, was taken to hospital by STARS air ambulance in critical but stable condition.
