Ontario man charged after police pursuit across city

An Ontario man is facing charges after a pursuit involving the Winnipeg police helicopter, stop sticks and a foot chase this weekend.

The incident lasted about 30 minutes and stretched through the Windsor Park, downtown and Osborne Village areas.

City police were sent to the first 100 block of Boulder Bay at about 10:20 p.m. Saturday regarding a report of a man in a vehicle “acting erratically.”

The driver, who was the only person in the vehicle, sped off when police arrived and struck a parked vehicle.

“Shortly into the pursuit, the suspect vehicle’s driver began to drive in a manner dangerous to the general public, including driving into oncoming traffic,” the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Monday.

Police vehicles backed off while the helicopter monitored the vehicle.

The suspect’s vehicle struck a stopped vehicle at the intersection of Donald Street and Portage Avenue, causing extensive damage.

Officers placed multiple stop sticks, intended to puncture vehicle tires, on roads to slow the vehicle. The damaged vehicle stopped in the 300 block of McMillan Avenue, and a suspect was arrested after a brief foot chase. No injuries were reported.

A 31-year-old man from Whitedog, Ont., is facing five charges, including flight from police and impaired driving.
