Patrons restrained an armed man trying to rob a Smitty’s restaurant in St. Vital on Monday evening.

Officers were sent to the restaurant at 150 Meadowood Dr. at about 6:20 p.m. and arrived to find a suspect still being restrained. A “sharp-edged weapon” was seized.

The suspect suffered minor injuries and was medically cleared by members of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Tuesday. The victims were uninjured, the WPS said.

A 35-year-old Winnipeg man is facing charges of robbery, possession of a weapon and disguise with intent. He was released on an undertaking.
