Pepper spray and Taser used on suspect in Roseau River First Nation

A 28-year-old man was sent to hospital with minor injuries after Manitoba First Nations police used a Taser and pepper spray to subdue him during an arrest in Roseau River Anishinabe First Nation Saturday morning.

Around 9:40 a.m. MFNPS officers in Roseau River went to a home in the community to find a man with an active warrant for sexual assault-related charges. The man was found and, when he was told he was under arrest, he became agitated and combative, the MFNPS said in a news release.

The suspect physically resisted the two officers’ attempts to restrain him and became further agitated, so officers used pepper spray but it was unsuccessful. A Taser was then used and it was successful, but the suspect continued to be unco-operative.

Additional officers were dispatched to assist and eventually the suspect was secured in a police vehicle. The Taser caused minor injuries and the 28-year-old suspect was taken to hospital in Altona. He was processed and released back into police custody a short time later.

The suspect was charged with resisting arrest and disobeying court orders. He remains in custody.
