A 54-year-old man is in custody, after police said he wandered through traffic on a major Winnipeg thoroughfare while armed with a knife Saturday morning.
Police responded to the 2300 block of Pembina Highway around 10:40 a.m. after a concerned citizen called for help. Officers arrived to find the man in the centre median, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Sunday.
“While yelling and screaming at officers, the man approached the police cruiser and began banging the windows using his fist and the weapon,” the release said.
“The officers, concerned for their own safety and that of the general public, voiced for additional units to assist in taking the agitated man into custody.”
The man continued displaying “erratic, violent behaviour” and police made several failed attempts to convince him to drop the weapon, police said.
Officers deployed multiple tasers before disarming him. The suspect was sedated, stabilized and taken to hospital for further assessment, police said.
Police believe the man was experiencing psychosis. Neither he nor the officers were injured during the incident, police said.
The man is facing charges for possession of a weapon and two counts of assault a peace officer with a weapon, WPS said. He remains in custody.
