The Albrechtsen Research Centre at St. Boniface Hospital was evacuated Friday, and the Winnipeg Police Service bomb unit was on site removing a “volatile substance” from the building.

WPS spokesman Const. Claude Chancy could not elaborate on what the substance was but said it was not a bomb and there was no danger to the public.

Officers were at the site at about 11 a.m. and were expected to remain there until at least mid-afternoon.

Chancy compared the situation to a similar incident in June, when the bomb unit was sent to the University of Manitoba to dispose of a potentially unstable chemical found in a storage room.
