A man is facing charges after he allegedly punched a city police officer and spat in his face.
Police were sent to a home on the 900 block of Winnipeg Avenue shortly before 3:30 a.m. Saturday after being told an intoxicated male was trying to fight family members. Family members were holding him down when officers got there.
The man allegedly punched an officer in the chest and spat “directly in his face,” the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Monday. Police seized the man and placed a head covering on him to prevent him from spitting again.
He was taken to Health Sciences Centre, where he again became violent, threatened to kill the officers and spat at them, the release said.
A medical examination found he suffered a fractured orbital bone and a one-inch laceration.
One officer was treated for being exposed to the man’s spit.
A 23-year-old man is facing three counts of assaulting a peace officer and one count of uttering threats. He was released on an undertaking.
The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba will review the man’s injury.
