Winnipeg police plan to maintain a visible presence with the anniversary of the Oct. 7 attacks on the horizon.

The Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Thursday it will provide a “layered approach” to community safety during the Jewish High Holidays. This will include uniformed patrols at places of worship and other gathering places, including one planned for the University of Manitoba Asper campus on Oct. 7.

Police will also be on hand for a pro-Palestinian event, scheduled for Saturday.

“With the increase in hate-related incidents, both antisemitic and Islamophobic, we are working with community leaders to help everyone feel safe,” the release said.

The WPS commended organizers for “finding the balance” and refraining from arranging counter-protests, saying it has minimized the need for significant police deployments.
