Police are investigating after a male in a ski mask grabbed a middle school student who was walking home in the St. Matthews area at lunchtime Tuesday.

The Winnipeg Police Service said a male approached a boy in the area of Banning Street and Einarson Avenue shortly after noon, said something and grabbed the victim.

“A brief struggle occurred, and the child broke free from the suspect, ran home and reported (the incident) to a parent,” the WPS said in a news release Thursday. The boy was not hurt.

The suspect was last seen northbound in the area of Banning Street and St. Matthews Avenue, possibly crossing through Orioles Park.

He was described as wearing a checkered/plaid shirt, blue jeans and a blue ski mask.

Police have been in contact with Greenway School, and the administration has notified the families of students, the WPS said.

The WPS child abuse unit is asking anyone who might have information about the incident, including video, to contact investigators at 204-986-3296, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477 (TIPS) or online.
