City police are ramping up their presence outside places of worship following a shooting outside a Belleville, Ont., synagogue on Sunday night.
In a Facebook post on Monday morning, the Winnipeg Police Service said it’s aware “of a concerning incident that took place at a Jewish place of worship in Belleville, Ontario last night.”
“As a precaution, the WPS will be increasing our presence at gathering spaces and places of worship throughout Winnipeg to provide community reassurance,” the post said.
The post comes after a shooting outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in the eastern Ontario city injured a police officer and another man.
“Our thoughts are with the Jewish community across Canada during this time, as well as with the officer in Belleville who remains in hospital,” the WPS post said.
Police in Belleville have not said what led to the shooting or if the synagogue or Jewish community was the target.
