The Winnipeg Police Service is warning citizens it will never ask for personal information or money after some people received calls from someone claiming to be a police officer.

The WPS received several reports Monday from people who were telephoned by someone claiming to be “Winnipeg police,” a WPS news release stated Tuesday.

The calls appeared to come from the Winnipeg police non-emergency line, as the number 204-986-6222 showed up on call display.

Police said reports were received from Ontario, Saskatchewan and British Columbia. The release said it was unclear what the motive of the callers was, but noted some calls included a request for personal information.

Police reminded residents never to disclose personal information about bank accounts, identification numbers, credit cards or personal finances to anyone.

Anyone who received a suspicious call of this nature is asked to contact the police non-emergency line at 204-986-6222.
