Winnipeg police are warning the public about text messages claiming to be from the Canada Revenue Agency.

The Winnipeg Police Service and the City of Winnipeg said in a news release that the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre has been receiving reports about such texts.

The message includes the victim’s full name and social insurance number and asks that a payment be sent to a phone number.

“If you have been part of a breach or a victim of identity theft, fraudsters will use the information as a tool to steal your money,” the news release states.

The Canada Revenue Agency does not send request payment via text message.
