A Winnipeg-based home building company that fell victim to a ransomware attack is warning customers their personal information might have been compromised.
Randall Homes became aware of the cyber attack on Oct. 17 after discovering “unauthorized individuals” had gained access to its computer system.
“This was part of an attempted ransomware attack,” the company said in an email to clients late last month. “Protecting your privacy and the security of your information is important to us, and so we wish to be transparent about what happened.”
The email said cybersecurity experts secured the company’s systems and discovered customers’ names, mailing addresses, phone numbers and emails might have been breached. In some cases, other information such as copies of driver’s licences and banking information might be compromised, it said.
The company has reported the crime to the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, and is encouraging customers to monitor financial accounts, change passwords and remain cautious about any unsolicited communications.
