RCMP used a police dog to track down a home invasion suspect hiding under a hedge in Dauphin on Tuesday.
Mounties were called to the break-and-enter at a home on the 100 block of 1st Avenue Southwest at about 9:10 p.m. on Tuesday, where the 24-year-old resident advised that a man smashed several windows, broke inside and assaulted him before running off. The victim declined medical help, RCMP say.
Just under a half hour later, officers found a suspect, who took off running again after the Mounties told him he was under arrest. Officers called for a police dog handler to send their canine to help search near 3rd Street Southwest and 4th Avenue Southwest.
Police found the suspect under a hedge. The suspect turned toward an officer with a lawnmower blade and the handler sent the dog to apprehend him, RCMP say.
Officers searched the suspect and found the blade at the scene. Paramedics took him to hospital to be treated for dog bites before he was taken into custody.
A 35-year-old Dauphin man has been charged with assault, assault a police officer with a weapon, break and enter, resisting arrest, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, mischief over $5,000 and failing to comply with a release order.
