Mounties in the Pembina Valley are investigating after a church in Carman was destroyed by fire Thursday morning.

The fire, which RCMP described as “suspicious” in a Friday afternoon news release, rendered the Grace-St. John’s Anglican Lutheran Church a complete loss.

Police were called to the building around 4:15 a.m., arriving to find local first responders were already on scene. Firefighters were not able to enter the building because the floor had already collapsed into the basement, RCMP said.

Nobody was inside the building at the time of the fire. No injuries were reported, police said.

The RCMP and the Office of the Fire Commissioner are investigating.

Police have asked anybody with video footage between the hours of 3:30 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. in the area of the fire to contact investigators at 204-745-6760.
