Police seized about 600 kilograms of illicit cannabis after making a traffic stop on the Trans-Canada Highway earlier this month.
Officers with the RCMP roving traffic unit stopped an eastbound commercial vehicle in the Rural Municipality of Portage la Prairie at about 12:25 p.m. on Sept. 4. They did a load inspection and found the cannabis.
A 65-year-old Toronto man will face charges under various acts.
“We continue to enforce the laws against illicit cannabis, as its possession is a criminal offence and is an issue of public safety,” Insp. Michael Gagliardi, the officer in charge of RCMP traffic services, said in a news release Thursday.
“Anyone purchasing illicit cannabis does not know where it came from or what it could be cut with. Often, illicit cannabis is associated with organized crime and all the other criminal elements that entails.”
