More help is on its way to Peguis First Nation as the community braces for flooding.
Canadian Red Cross technicians are now in the Manitoba community helping with sandbagging and preparing to set up flood barriers as needed, said a Wednesday release from the emergency relief organization.
The teams were dispatched on behalf of Indigenous Services Canada.
Alongside helping with front-line flood efforts, the Red Cross will provide Peguis with insulated hip waders, rubber boots and insulated gloves.
Cots are being provided as well for volunteers coming to help from outside of the community. Warming tents are also being set up, with each tent equipped with power, heat and a place to rest.
The federal government deployed Team Rubicon to Peguis, about 180 kilometres north of Winnipeg, last week. The non-profit humanitarian organization’s volunteers include military veterans and retired first responders.
Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Lisa Naylor said Tuesday an evacuation is “very likely” for the community of about 11,500 people, even if flooding only cuts off roads.
