Two men from Saskatoon have been arrested after allegedly trying to rob a man who managed to escape by jumping from a moving vehicle on New Year’s Day.
Winnipeg police were called by a concerned onlooker who saw a man jumping from a vehicle, which then sped off, in the West Alexander neighbourhood at about 5 p.m. The vehicle had a Saskatchewan licence plate, and city police called RCMP for help.
The victim, in his 40s, told police he had arranged to meet an acquaintance to sell a pair of “high-end” shoes. He got into the man’s vehicle to buy the shoes, but said a second man, who was hiding in the back seat, pointed a gun at him.
The driver sped off, but the victim managed to jump from the car, taking the shoes with him. The victim suffered minor injuries and declined medical help, police said Friday.
Winnipeg Police Service spokeswoman Const. Dani McKinnon said she did not know the value of the shoes or whether investigators believe the suspects came to the city specifically for the transaction.
Saskatchewan RCMP arrested two suspects driving near Whitewood, Sask., hours later and handed them over to Winnipeg police major crimes investigators.
Muhammad Ehan Zawar and Syed Maaz Ali, both 20-year-old Saskatoon residents, are charged with armed robbery using a firearm and forcible confinement. Both were held in custody.
