The family of a Winnipeg Beach woman killed in a head-on collision in late January has established an academic scholarship in her memory.

A scholarship in Nicole Grushka’s memory will support a graduating Gimli High School student from Winnipeg Beach who is entering the child-care or teaching field.

Grushka, 20, died on Jan. 27 after her vehicle and 27-year-old Samantha Zimmerman’s car collided head-on on Highway 8 in the RM of St. Andrews.

A GoFundMe fundraiser had raised $35,758 for the scholarship as of Thursday morning.

“Nicole had a natural gift with children — they were drawn to her kind heart, playful spirit, warm hugs, and genuine caring nature. Every child she encountered loved her instantly,” the GoFundMe said.

Grushka was pursuing a teaching career at the time of her death, the fundraiser’s description said.
