The Winnipeg Sea Bears’ team captain and homegrown fan-favourite died Wednesday, following complications arising from brain surgery, the basketball club announced.
Chad Posthumus had undergone surgery on Nov. 9 to repair a brain aneurysm, which he suffered during a training session.
“Stricken by a brain aneurysm on Nov. 9 and then by complication arising from corrective surgery, Chad fought hard but was unable to recover,” the club wrote on its Instagram account. “Chad was and will always remain the face of our team.”
Posthumus was 33 years old. He was the first player to sign a contract with the Sea Bears when it joined the Canadian Elite Basketball League.
He grew up in Winnipeg, playing high school basketball at River East Collegiate. Prior to returning to his hometown, he suited up for Canadian Elite Basketball League teams in Edmonton, Saskatchewan and Ottawa.
