The Winnipeg Sea Bears plucked a pair of local products during today’s Canadian Elite Basketball League draft.

Winnipeg is bringing back the league’s U SPORTS player of the year, University of Manitoba Bisons star Simon Hildebrandt, who was taken in the first round (eighth overall). The Sea Bears used their third-round selection (28th overall) to welcome University of Winnipeg Wesmen standout Shawn Maranan.

Tyler Sagle of Lakehead University (Thunder Bay, Ont.) is also returning to the Sea Bears. He was taken in the second round (13th overall).

Hildebrandt averaged 5.9 points and 3.1 rebounds in 20.6 minutes per contest for Winnipeg in 2023, the team’s inaugural CEBL campaign.

Maranan was a Canada West second-team all-star.

The Sea Bears open training camp Monday, May 13 before they head to Saskatchewan to take on the Rattlers in their season-opener May 22.
