Police have charged two employees of a private security company over allegations they defrauded their employer.

The business’s owner noticed “suspicious payroll activity” between May 2022 and August 2023 and contacted Winnipeg Police Service financial crime investigators in February.

Investigators allege a man who had worked as the company’s staffing manager and a woman who worked as an operations manager, who oversaw payroll administration, worked together to inflate the man’s work hours. He was overpaid by more than $72,000, the WPS said in a news release Thursday.

Police said the payroll was adjusted and processed to match the hours the man claimed to have worked.

Ana Patricia Pereira de Jesus, 32, turned herself in in June. Mayur Pankajbhai Patel, 25, turned himself in Wednesday.

Both are charged with fraud over $5,000 and mischief to data. Pereira de Jesus is also charged with theft over $5,000.

Both were released on promises to appear in court.
