An 81-year-old man was killed in a fire that destroyed his South Osborne house over the weekend.

City police and firefighters responded to a blaze that broke out in a residence in the 600 block of Nassau Street South around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Emergency responders deemed it unsafe to enter the house “due to the intensity of the fire,” the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Tuesday.

The release states a senior victim was located following an external attack to put out the fire and a systematic search of the structure that is now considered “a complete loss.”

Family members have been notified and the cause of the fire is not believed to be suspicious, police said.
