Shilo soldiers off to fight Alberta wildfires

A company from Second Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry was deployed from CFB Shilo on Friday morning to help fight wildfires in Alberta.
Around 75 soldiers loaded their gear onto three buses that headed out from the base just after 10 a.m. It’s the first time 2PPCLI have been deployed on wildfire duty this year.
Major Devin Kruk told the Brandon Sun before departure that they won’t know which fire they will be tasked with fighting until they arrive in Alberta and given orders by the unified command.
Soldiers are likely to be put to work behind the front lines, dealing with things like hotspots.
Between 30 and 50 per cent of the buildings in Jasper townsite in Jasper National Park are believed to have been destroyed by a fire earlier this week.
