Police say an employee is facing charges and a shoplifter suffered serious injuries after a confrontation outside a West Alexander store Saturday night.
Officers were patrolling when they saw two men — one armed with a large edged weapon — fighting at about 8 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service said in a release Tuesday.
Investigators learned one of the men had left the business on the 600 block of William Avenue with stolen goods, the WPS said. The employee grabbed the weapon and confronted the other man outside, striking him multiple times, the release said.
A 41-year-old man was taken to hospital in unstable condition with “serious bodily injuries” and later upgraded to stable, the WPS said.
The employee, a 28-year-old Winnipeg man, was arrested and is facing charges of aggravated assault and possession of a weapon. He was released on an undertaking.
The WPS asked anyone with information about the incident to contact the major crimes unit at 204-986-6219, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477 (TIPS) or online.
