One man was taken to hospital after a fire broke out in a two-storey home in Winnipeg’s St. John’s neighbourhood on Wednesday afternoon.
Fire crews were called to the blaze around 1:30 p.m. after reports of a fire in the 300 block of St. John’s Avenue.
Firefighters were able to attack the fire from inside the home and put out the flames just before 2:30 p.m.
The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said all occupants of the home were able to self-evacuate before emergency personnel arrived. Two people were treated by paramedics and sent to hospital in stable condition. Crews found a cat deceased in the home.
The city’s emergency social services team was also on-site to temporarily support displaced residents as an extreme cold warning blanketed the city.
Investigators determined the fire was accidental and caused by an electrical malfunction.
The WFPS did not have a damage estimate as of Wednesday evening.
WFPS said residents in the area should use caution as water used to douse the flames froze and created slippery conditions. De-icing agents are being applied and city crews are monitoring conditions on roads and sidewalks in the area.
