RCMP say a 16-year-old boy is a suspect after Steinbach Regional Secondary School was evacuated because of a bomb threat Thursday.
Police, including a canine unit, and firefighters were sent to the high school — one of the largest in the province, with roughly 2,000 students — shortly after 10:30 a.m.
Officers learned an unknown male had called from a payphone with the threat, RCMP said in an afternoon news release. No suspicious devices were found inside the building.
The Hanover School Division informed parents about the threat in an email.
“Students are being released to return home. Any student belongings will be secured in the building. Entry to the school will not be permitted until RCMP have given clearance to do so,” superintendent Joe Thiessen wrote in an email to families earlier Tuesday.
Residents were asked to avoid the area.
