Police are searching for a suspect after a man was stabbed in St. Boniface late Tuesday afternoon.

Officers were sent to the 100 block of Dumoulin Street at about 4:06 p.m. and found a 24-year-old man suffering from life-threatening injuries to his upper body. They gave him emergency medical care and used a life-saving chest seal.

The man was transported to hospital in unstable condition and has since been upgraded to stable, the Winnipeg Police Service said Thursday morning.

The initial investigation determined the victim and the suspect were together at Orange Park, near the intersection of St. Joseph and Notre Dame streets, when they got into an argument. One man stabbed the other in the upper body several times, the WPS said.

The suspect fled before police arrived. The weapon used in the assault was found by police.

A WPS spokesman said the victim has been unco-operative with police, so it’s not clear how well the two men know each other, but it appears it was not a random encounter.

The suspect is described as Indigenous, 20 to 25 years old, about 5-5 in height, with long black hair in a ponytail, and wearing a dark hoodie and khaki pants.

The WPS is asking anyone with information about the incident or the suspect to contact its major crimes unit at 204-986-6219, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477 (TIPS) or online.
