Emergency crews were on scene outside a high school in Shaughnessy Park Thursday evening where witnesses say a person was struck by a taxi cab.

Fire crews, paramedics and police closed a section of Burrows Avenue near Fife Street around 5 p.m. as emergency responders treated the victim, who lay motionless in the westbound lane. Witnesses told the Free Press they believed the victim was a female.

The accident occurred at a crosswalk near Sisler High School. The lights on the crosswalk were functioning.

A red Duffy’s Taxi remained in the roadway after the victim was transported from the scene. Discarded medical gloves and blood could be seen on the pavement. Steps away, police took a statement from the cab driver, who repeatedly clasped his hands to his mouth in an apparent state of shock.

Calls to the Winnipeg Police Service public information office and Duffy’s Taxi were not immediately returned Thursday night.

The condition of the victim is unknown.
