A new trip-booking system for Winnipeg Transit Plus users will launch next month.

The system was developed by Canadian company Spare Labs Inc. It allows users to request rides through apps or a web browser and includes an automated phone service with voice-response technology.

Starting June 11, customers who book trips for June 18 onward will experience some changes in advance of the launch.

The automated phone service will be available June 18, but the app will initially be available to only a select group of early adopters. The app will fully launch July 9.

Transit Plus is also introducing e-cash payments. There will be a one-time transfer of up to $200 from Transit Plus accounts to e-cash. Customers with more than $200 in their account will be refunded the remainder of their balance.

The City of Winnipeg said the changes will increase ride-sharing, allow for more trip requests and improve route planning.

“Customer service representatives will also be able to provide quicker responses,” the city said in a new release.

Winnipeg Transit On-Request, which began as a pilot project in 2021, will permanently join the new system later this year.
