A pair of cyclists were injured in a collision Thursday night, after a motorist struck them from behind on a highway near Morden.

Mounties from the Pembina Valley detachment responded to Highway 3, near road 31 West, in the Rural Municipality of Stanley, around 11:30 p.m., the Manitoba RCMP said in a news release Friday.

Officers found a vehicle parked on the shoulder of the highway’s westbound lane with two bicycles in front of it. Investigators learned the cyclists were travelling west on the highway when the motorist, also travelling west, struck them, police said.

First responders were already treating the two cyclists — a 78-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman, both from the RM of Stanley — when officers arrived. They were transported to hospital, police said.

The man suffered minor injuries and was released shortly after. The woman suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and remains in hospital, RCMP said.

Police have charged the motorist, a 35-year-old man, also from the area, with careless driving. He was served with a serious offence notice. The investigation is ongoing, police said.
