A woman accused of assaulting two men who caught her stealing a vehicle Thursday morning has been arrested.

Winnipeg Police Service officers were sent to Lydia Street between Notre Dame and McDermot avenues at about 8:15 a.m., where the victim and bystanders were holding onto a car thief.

Police learned a woman entered the driver’s seat of an unlocked Chevrolet Equinox that had been left running, then reversed it into a garbage bin, causing about $2,500 in damage.

The owner of the vehicle and another man confronted her and pulled her out of the vehicle, and she assaulted them, police said. Neither were hurt.

Several bystanders intervened, and the group held the woman until officers arrived.

A 35-year-old woman is charged with motor vehicle theft and two counts of assault. She has been held in custody.
