Police are alerting the public about a sex offender considered a high risk to reoffend being released from jail.
Richard Kofie Asante, 34, was released from Edmonton Institution on Wednesday after serving a portion of his three-year sentence for sexual assault with a weapon, and sexual assault by choking, suffocation or strangling.
Asante is expected to reside in Winnipeg, according to a news release from the Manitoba Integrated High Risk Sex Offender Unit (MIHRSOU) is a joint forces unit of the Winnipeg Police Service and the RCMP.
Asante’s charges and conviction stem from a July 9, 2021, incident where he met his victim on social media before meeting in person. Asante became angered by a comment from the victim, which resulted in him choking the victim and holding a large knife to her throat after she began screaming for help. Asante choked the victim unconscious before committing violent sexual offences.
He will be on supervised probation for 10 years and is not allowed to possess a weapon.
“This information is provided to enable members of the public to take suitable measures to protect themselves,” a release said. “Any form of vigilante activity or other unreasonable conduct directed at Mr. Asante will not be tolerated.”
