Winnipeg firefighters battle two blazes Sunday afternoon

Winnipeg firefighters were kept busy Sunday afternoon battling blazes in a high-rise apartment and a garage.

Just after 3 p.m., Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews were called to an 11-storey apartment on the 800 block of Main Street, where they found smoke inside the building.

Firefighters found the source of the smoke and contained the blaze to the unit where the flames were sparked by just after 3:30 p.m.

Most residents were able to stay in their suites, while others were evacuated. Paramedics assessed two people and one was taken to hospital in stable condition, as firefighters ventilated smoke from the building.

Earlier, just after 2:30 p.m., crews were called to a garage fire on Whitley Drive in St. Vital, where they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the building.

Firefighters got the flames under control by about 4 p.m.
