Winnipeg is now under an extreme cold warning, following warnings issued for much of western Manitoba Tuesday night.

Environment and Climate Change Canada said extreme wind chill values of -40 C and colder will continue for parts of eastern Saskatchewan and western Manitoba.

In an alert at 7:19 a.m., the national weather agency issued the warning for the City of Winnipeg.

The agency said a cold mass of arctic air is moving over Saskatchewan and western Manitoba. The cold air mass is dropping overnight lows to near -30 C or colder, producing even colder windchill values.

The wind chill values will moderate during the day Wednesday, the agency forecasted, but extreme wind chill will return overnight.

The weather agency advised that frostbite can develop on exposed skin within minutes in such extreme cold.
