Woman, 48, facing manslaughter charge after fatal assault

A 48-year-old woman has been charged with manslaughter after a woman who was assaulted at a Young Street home last month died in hospital.

Winnipeg police said officers were called to a residence in the 100 block of Young Street at about 8:40 p.m. on Aug. 18, where they found a 57-year-old woman suffering from injuries sustained in an assault.

The woman was taken to hospital and initially stabilized, but her condition later deteriorated. She died Sept. 20.

Police identified the victim as Brenda Kate Cromarty, 57, a member of St. Theresa Point First Nation who had been living in Winnipeg.

The suspect had fled before officers arrived, police said.

The homicide unit identified 48-year-old Michelle Margaret Jane Robinson as a suspect and, following consultation with Manitoba Justice, a manslaughter charge was authorized. Robinson was arrested Sept. 25 in northern Manitoba by members of the Manitoba Integrated Violent Offenders Apprehension Unit.

She has been charged with manslaughter and remains in custody.
