An officer shot a woman armed with a weapon who was walking in and out of traffic and climbing onto vehicles on the Trans-Canada Highway on Monday night, RCMP say.
Carberry RCMP were sent to an area near Road 88 West, west of the town, at about 9:30 p.m.
The first officer to arrive there saw a woman acting erratically and climbing up onto vehicles while brandishing an “edged weapon.”
RCMP said in a news release Tuesday that the officer tried to de-escalate the situation, but that did not work. The officer repeatedly told the woman to drop the weapon, but she turned towards him as he approached and moved towards him, RCMP said.
The officer then shot the woman. Police gave her medical aid until emergency crews arrived. The 54-year-old woman, from the Municipality of North Cypress-Langford, was transported to hospital in stable condition.
Video from the officer’s body camera will be turned over to the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba.
The province said in an email at 1:45 p.m. that the westbound lanes of the Trans-Canada from Road 87 West to Road 88 West had reopened.
