Manitoba’s largest school division postponed its annual celebration powwow because of poor air quality caused by wildfires.

The Winnipeg School Division had been planning to host its sixth annual powwow at Technical Vocational High School on Thursday, with a grand entry originally scheduled for 10:15 a.m. The end-of-year event draws about 10,000 people to the Tec Voc campus.

Senior administration called off the event around 8:45 a.m. Thursday. A new date has yet to be announced.

“Due to today’s poor air quality health quality index, WSD is postponing its annual powwow celebration. We look forward to gathering and learning outdoors when it’s more comfortable and safer to do so,” the division said in an alert to reporters.
