Air Tahiti Nui an award-winner for best cabin staff

WITH the tropical feel of a Pacific blue interior, and the flight attendant’s colourful island dress, Air Tahiti Nui is an airline that absolutely knows where it’s headed.

It’s been in business since 1998, with a fleet of Airbus 340-300s, considered the quietest in the sky. Based in Tahiti, its routes include Tokyo, Sydney, Auckland, Los Angeles, Paris, and New York.

For the peak 2009 summer season, June through September, the French Polynesian carrier will be operating a minimum of 13 flights per week from Los Angeles International Airport to Faa’a International Airport in Papeete, Tahiti.

Air Tahiti Nui’s decision not to operate its twice-weekly JFK summer flights, and to streamline service through its West Coast gateway, is based on its available capacity to Tahiti and current economic conditions.

Air Tahiti Nui was named the ‘Best Airline — Pacific Region,’ and recognized as having the ‘Best Cabin Staff — Pacific Region,’ in the 2008 Skytrax World Airline Survey for the sixth consecutive year.

This is no surprise. Flight attendants are attentive, courteous and professional. When they smile and say "enjoy your meal," they mean it. And I did — the two hot meals on my eight-hour flight were outstanding.

Printed menus were provided with several choices of elegant cuisine, blending Polynesian and French culinary influences. Choices included smoked salmon and pasta, or lamb and curry sauce, complete with free alcoholic beverages, even a wonderful French wine. A blanket and pillow are provided along with an amenity kit full of goodies such as earphones, socks, eye mask, earplugs and a wet wipe — all this in economy class.

The airline also provides a disposable headrest cover on the seat, a welcomed necessity and something I haven’t noticed on other airlines.

In-flight entertainment offered multiple options rerunning on a loop, with games as well. And with a breakfast of crepes, smothered in chocolate sauce and almonds offered two hours before arrival, it all made for a very pleasant flight.
