BANFF, Alta. – Second-degree murder charges have been filed against a B.C. man in connection with a fatal stabbing outside a bar in Banff, Alta.

RCMP say they responded to a 911 call early Saturday about a stabbing that occurred after an altercation outside a local drinking establishment on Banff Avenue.

A 27-year-old man from Foothills County, Alta., was located when police arrived, but he was declared dead in hospital.

Two males were taken into custody, but RCMP said Sunday one of them men was released without charges after determining he was not directly involved.

Twenty-year-old John Sproule of Lake Country, B.C., has been charged with second degree murder.

Mounties say in a statement they don’t believe the incident is related to another fight at a Banff bar on Aug. 5 that left a 26-year-old resident of the town dead, and a 22-year-old man also from Banff charged with second-degree murder.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published Sept. 5, 2022.

Note to readers: This is a corrected story; An earlier version had the incorrect spelling of the accused’s surname based on an earlier RCMP news release.
