A year after four Indian nationals were found frozen to death near the Manitoba-U.S. border, police are still trying to trace the family’s time in Canada.
The bodies of Jagdish Patel, 39; his wife Vaishaliben Patel, 37; their 11-year-old daughter, Vihangi; and their three-year-old son, Dharmik, were found on Jan. 19, 2022, near Emerson, Man., just metres from the U.S. border.
Here is a timeline of what police say are the Patels’ known movements in Canada.

Jan. 12, 2022 – The family arrived at Toronto Pearson International Airport at about 2:30 p.m. on a flight that left Dubai, United Arab Emirates, the same day. The family was picked up at the airport by a private vehicle.
Jan. 13, 2022 – Between their arrival and the 13th, the Patels stayed at a hotel in the Mississauga, Ont., area. They travelled in the Toronto area using both private vehicles and a ride-sharing service.
Jan. 14-16, 2022 – Between these days, the family moved around the Mississauga area and Welland, Ont.
Jan. 17, 2022 – RCMP say they have no information on the family’s whereabouts.
Jan. 18, 2022 – The Patels arrived in Emerson sometime in the late evening to begin their attempted crossing. Police do not know how they travelled to the province.
Jan. 19, 2022- The Patels’ bodies were found near the border in the morning.
