NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Jerry Deng knocked down a 3-pointer with 24 seconds left to put Hampton in front and Jordan Nesbitt hit three of four from the line to preserve a 63-61 win over Howard at the Legacy Classic in Newark, N.J. Saturday.
Deng led Hampton with 21 points, shooting 8 for 13, including 4 for 6 from beyond the arc for the Pirates (5-18, 0-10 Coastal Athletic Association). Nesbitt added 17 points while shooting 4 for 10 (1 for 3 from 3-point range) and 8 of 11 from the free throw line, and he also had five rebounds and five assists. Tedrick Wilcox Jr. shot 3 for 7 (0 for 3 from 3-point range) and 2 of 3 from the free throw line to finish with eight points. The win broke a 13-game slide for the Pirates.
The Bison (9-14, 3-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) were led in scoring by Dom Campbell, who finished with 18 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks. Bryce Harris added 16 points, 14 rebounds and three steals for Howard. Marcus Dockery also recorded 11 points, six rebounds and two steals.
Deng scored 10 points in the first half and Hampton went into halftime trailing 34-27. Nesbitt scored 14 points in the second half. Hampton outscored Howard by nine points over the final half.
Hampton’s next game is Thursday against Hofstra at home. Howard visits Delaware State on Monday.
