CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) — Tommy Rittenhouse ran for a touchdown and threw for another and Daniel Sobkowicz caught one touchdown pass and threw another as Illinois State pulled away to beat in-state rival Southern Illinois 45-10 in a Missouri Valley Conference contest Saturday night.
Rittenhouse raced 36 yards to score the game’s opening touchdown, but the Salukis answered with a 93-yard, nine-play drive capped by a 10-yard run by Hunter Simmons early in the second quarter. The Redbirds took the lead for good when Rittenhouse hit Sobkowicz with a 38-yard pass and Ian Wagner kicked a 47-yard field goal to make it 17-7 at intermission.
Sobkowicz took a pitch out and fired a 28-yard touchdown pass to Xavier Loyd to start the fourth quarter and Jake Rubley hit Braden Contreras from 20 yards out two minutes later. Seth Glatz capped the scoring with a 26-yard sprint to the end zone with 3:24 left.
Rittenhouse completed 16 of 30 pass attempts for 172 yards with an interception and carried six times for 84 yards to lead Illinois State (4-2, 1-1). Loyd caught four passes for 87 yards and a score and Sobkowicz caught five for 79 yards.
Simmons completed 16 of 28 passes for 160 yards and carried six times for another 71 to lead Southern Illinois (2-4, 0-2). Jake Curry was 8 of 19 for 133 yards but threw a pair of interceptions.
