VANCOUVER – Police in Vancouver are investigating the death of a 92-year-old man who was assaulted by “multiple people” and left injured in a Downtown Eastside alley.

Const. Tania Visintin says the man was a Chinatown resident who was found in the lane behind the Carnegie Community Centre more than five weeks ago.

Police say the victim was in medical distress on the afternoon of March 18 behind the centre, which is considered a social and cultural hub for both the Downtown Eastside and Chinatown.

They say the man was taken to hospital by an ambulance, where he died on March 31.

The department says its homicide unit began an investigation and officers are now focused on whether the assaults contributed to his death.

Police say they have identified several suspects, but are urging anyone with information to contact the homicide unit.

“We share the community’s grief over this loss of life and we understand there are many questions,” Visintin says in the release.

“Information about this death will undoubtedly impact peoples’ sense of safety and community in Chinatown. Although it will take time, we are committed to finding all of the answers.”
