Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating after an officer fatally shot a man in Niagara Falls on Wednesday morning.

The Special Investigations Unit says the shooting happened around 11:15 a.m. in the area of Stanley Avenue and Peer Street.

It says members of the Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement squad, which is operated by Ontario Provincial Police and involves officers from various police forces, were there to arrest a man on parole violations.

The SIU says there was an “interaction” and one officer fired at the 40-year-old man, who was taken to hospital and pronounced dead.

The watchdog says an officer was also taken to hospital with a serious injury.

Niagara Region police say their officers were not involved in the shooting but some of them assisted in the response.
