HAMILTON – Ontario’s police watchdog says it has launched an investigation after a 62-year-old man who had barricaded himself in his home during a police standoff was found dead.

The Special Investigations Unit says Hamilton Police responded to a call from a person in crisis in the city on Friday morning.

The SIU says the man told police he had explosives and demanded a negotiator come to his home.

They say police surrounded the home and negotiated with the man throughout the day.

The SIU says police sent a drone into the man’s home in the late afternoon which found the man lying on the floor with blood around him.

Police say there will be an increased police presence in the area throughout the weekend as investigators continue to look into what happened.
