MEDICINE HAT – Authorities in southeastern Alberta have ended an emergency alert that was in effect due to a wildfire.
An alert early on Sunday afternoon had warned that a fire east of the community of Dunmore was threatening residential homes.
Anyone in the immediate area of the fire, which was south of Highway 1 along Range Road 40, was being told to evacuate if it was safe to do so.
The alert was dropped a few hours later, and the province’s emergency alert system said that anyone evacuated by the wildfire could return home.
Cypress County Director of Emergency Management Joe Cartwright said in a social media post that the fire was contained and no residences were lost due to the extraordinary efforts of firefighters.
Dunmore is approximately 275 kilometres southeast of Calgary.
